The classic first-timer route through Japan — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka — is wonderful and exhausting. For a calmer alternative, central Japan offers castle towns, sacred shrines, mountain walks, and one of the country's most distinctive food cultures, all reachable from a single base. Here is a five-day loop built around Nagoya, with no hotel changes.
Day 1 — Nagoya city
Ease in with the city itself. Start with a morning-service coffee breakfast, then Nagoya Castle and its beautifully reconstructed Honmaru Palace. Afternoon at the Tokugawa Art Museum or the railway museum, then a Nagoya-meshi dinner — miso katsu or hitsumabushi eel.
Day 2 — The Expo park and Nagakute
Ride the Linimo maglev out to Aichi Expo Memorial Park. Spend the day in the parkland and, if you have secured tickets, the Ghibli Park attractions within it — booked well in advance, as timed entry sells out. Pair with the Toyota Automobile Museum nearby if time allows.
Day 3 — Inuyama and the Kiso River
A short Meitetsu-line ride reaches Inuyama, home to one of Japan's oldest original castle keeps. Wander the restored castle town, visit the river, and return to Nagoya by evening. Compact, historic, and easy.
Day 4 — Ise Jingu
Take a limited express south into Mie for Ise Grand Shrine, the spiritual heart of Shinto. Visit the outer and inner shrines through their forest approaches, then rest in the Edo-style pilgrim town at the gates before heading back.
Day 5 — Kiso Valley walk
End with a walk on the old Nakasendo highway between the preserved post towns of Magome and Tsumago — cedar forest, stone paths, and a landscape little changed in centuries. Return to Nagoya, or continue onward to Nagano or Kyoto from here.
